In light of the growing global challenges—armed conflicts, climate change, and socio-economic instability—Europe’s future relies on the talent of young researchers. In response to this urgent need, and under the sponsorship of the current EELISA Governing Board Chairs from SSSA and SNS, the EELISA leadership has issued a joint statement on young researchers, innovators and future global challenges, underscoring the critical importance of nurturing and retaining the next generation of researchers to address these pressing issues
This joint statement, signed on the final day of the EELISA Governing Board meeting (Pisa, 18-19 November 2024), emphasizes the growing challenges posed by Europe’s aging population and shifting demographic landscape. These changes highlight the urgent need to foster a new generation of innovators capable of developing creative solutions. However, young researchers often encounter significant barriers, including financial constraints, unequal access to resources, and work-life imbalances. The statement stresses the vital role of education in attracting, nurturing, and retaining top talent. To achieve this, Europe’s higher education system must provide strong career prospects, inclusive environments, and ensure academic freedom.
