READ BEFORE YOU BEGIN!

Attendance to these courses will give you credits that will help you obtain the EELISA Supplement. If you want these courses to be also accepted as credits for your school year, you need to proceed as-is:

  • Apply for the course at the host institution
  • Get an acceptance letter from the person in charge of the course
  • Show the acceptance letter to the dean of studies (international affairs) of your home institution
  • Get approval from your dean of studies
  • Get a certificate of attendance and validation of the course at the host institution at the end of the course (after examination, if this applies)
  • Transmit the certificate to the dean of studies at your home institution.

Please, note that the dates for some of the courses are based on those from the academic year 2020-2021. For the latest update on each course date, please request more information from the contact person. For a larger list of courses, you are advised to contact the international affairs office of your institution.

Building with Earth

WHAT

Context: Some of the oldest buildings on the planet are made of earth and the population living in buildings made of raw earth is estimated at several billions. Today most people using raw earth to build home are in developing countries while home builders of developed countries have moved from traditional earth construction techniques to “modern” techniques using generally cement based materials.
Nowadays, in the face of global climate change, raw earth is again considered to be a valuable interesting building material in developed countries1 mainly because earth extraction is essentially free of CO2 and the raw earth is easy to recycle. The revival of raw earth as a raw material for construction is accompanied by a research and development effort to develop materials with optimized properties for their implementation and use.
Work: During the week students will address issues related to the production of building materials, their properties in use, their durability and their environmental impact by combining bibliographic, theoretical, numerical and experimental research to develop and implement materials that meet the requirements of a specification.

CESM – Circular Economy and Sustainability Management

WHAT

The main target of the of the Circular Economy and Sustainability Management (CESM) seasonal school is represented by students from different backgrounds interested in the field of efficient resource management and circular economy. The CESM course explores organizational aspects and innovation facets related to all phases of the product life cycle; moreover, it provides practical overview of how processes, decisions and business models should change in light of the new circular economy paradigm. In more detail, the CESM seasonal school consists of 9 training modules lasting half day each on issues such as: circular economy assessment, circular design, strategy development & business models, communication. Finally, a half-day laboratory is scheduled to apply what students have learned in all previous lessons. Therefore, the learning objectives of CESM encompass: helping participants to acquire a framework of useful skills to seize the opportunities in the economic shift; managing the challenges and transformation processes in a circular logic in order to encourage the practical application of the knowledge gained.

Chemistry in Nanotechnology

WHAT

The course presents recent developments in nanotechnology and nanoscience using chemical methods. We will overview measurement techniques for nanosclae building blocks, namely transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS). Synthesis of nanoparticles: chemical, physical and biological methods and chemical stabilization of nanoparticles. Purification and size and shape-selective purification of nanoparticles. The stability of nanoparticles and interactions existing at nanoscale and using them for the self-assembly of nanoscopic components: nanostuctured materials. Usage of nanoparticles in chemistry, medicine and chemical robotics. Targeted drug delivery applications.

Chemistry probes for bioimaging

WHAT

The field of medical imaging has become a real specialty and cutting-edge research is perfectly adapted to the activities of university and industrial laboratories. The development of this discipline is closely linked to the active development of new probes to target or probe pathological biological tissues in order to establish a quantitative diagnosis. This diagnosis is evaluated in vitro, in vivo in preclinical to clinical studies and associated with industrial production. The following fields of imaging will be covered by chemists or biophysicists: Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance, Nuclear Medicine, Optics, Nanoparticle Agents, Theranostics Probes (imaging + drug). In addition, molecular and physico-chemical characteristics will be represented. Finally, some in vivo biological applications for the detection of cancer, inflammation and the impact of treatment will illustrate the interest in the diagnosis and therapy of functionalized probes.

Cibo, sostenibilità e diritti

WHAT

The Seasonal School will introduce participants to the urgent topic of food sustainability, exploring how to build sustainable and climate-resilient agri-food systems through a dialogue between social and life sciences. Regulatory and non-regulatory measures for socially inclusive and environmentally more efficient food systems will be addressed. The policy and legal implications of the transformative approach recently taken by the EU with the European Green Deal and the shift towards more sustainable solutions in a Farm to Fork perspective will be thoroughly analysed during the Seasonal School. Topics such as food security and the right to food, food safety, international trade, digital innovation and blockchain will be at a centre stage. Moreover, issues linked to farming and consumption models will be taken into consideration through seminars given by scholars from the life science Institute.
