Green AI Hackathon for CO2-aware models for sustainable artificial intelligence
This activity consists of a 4-day hybrid workshop & hackathon for BSc, MSc, and PhD students across EELISA partner universities, to co-design, prototype, and benchmark “green AI” solutions that explicitly aim to minimize CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and compute cost in model training and inference. Participants will engage in high-intensity teamwork (two full hack days) guided by mentors.
PROGRAMME
Day 1 – Arrival and a first social interaction.
Day 2 (morning) – group formation and project framing: students are guided to form interdisciplinary teams and pick one of the proposed challenge ideas (or pitch new ones).
Day 2 (afternoon) & Day 3 – groups execute their prototypes: writing code, measuring metrics (energy use, runtime, memory, accuracy, CO₂ estimates), iterating optimizations, and preparing results. Mentors will hold scheduled check-in sessions (onsite/remote) for troubleshooting and guidance.
Day 4 – Project presentations and farewell.
Hybrid live presentations enable both in-person and remote attendees to view and engage via chat or Q&A. Please indicate when applying whether you plan to join in person or online.
