MISCEA thesis offer ESR08 - Public policies making and reception for indoor environmental quality - Micropollutants source control in dwellings
Type of offer PhD
Target PhD
Location Champs sur Marne (Paris)
Education requirements Environmental knowledge, aptitude for fieldwork and a mastery of quantitative survey protocols (questionnaires, statistics for analysing a sociological survey, etc.), ability to work as part of a team and maintain a scientific curiosity in order to understand the issues raised by the other disciplines involved in the project.
Key Description The first scientific objective is to characterise the ways in which the public problem of indoor air and water quality and that of micropollutants have been elaborated and have gradually become public health and environmental issues requiring the intervention of public authorities, but often in a non-integrated manner.
Secondly, we need to understand the relation in between: (a) the cognitive construction of the water and air quality issues and, (b) the choice of public policy instruments and their implementation by the public stakeholders (local, regional and national authorities). In these policies, there is in fact a question of multi-level governance, as actions and combinations of actions implemented at the scale of urban territories by local authorities may be very different.
Finally, this research on the public policy instruments will have to take into account the way targeted beneficiaries 'receive' the various messages and injunctions resulting from the choice of instruments (Baldassare and Katz, 1992; Halkier 2001; Kim et al, 2019). How are incentives to change practices or use of technical systems appropriated (or suverted) by the various targeted audiences?

MISCEA thesis offer ESR07 - Multiphysics simulation of 3D concrete printing process: from printability to structural resilience
Type of offer PhD
Target PhD
Location Champs sur Marne (Paris)
Education requirements High level of programming skills, mechanics of materials, numerical methods.
Key Description The growing popularity of 3D printing with cement-based materials is leading to an increasing need for simulation tools able to predict stability during printing as well as durability during service life. Development of simulation tools requires a good understanding of the behavior of cement-based materials from early-age to hardened state, including strong couplings between mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and chemical aspects. It also asks for modelling strategies regarding the printing process itself to correctly assess actions on the material during printing, both from the printer and surrounding environment like thermal and drying effects.
Most existing models for 3D printing focus essentially on the mechanical aspect of the behavior and printability of the structure. Development of a fully coupled predicting modelling tool for 3D printing is by essence a multidisciplinary task, needing a good knowledge of printing process, behavior of cement-based materials, thermodynamics and mechanics of chemically active porous materials, and numerical simulations. To tackle this problem a collective expertise has been mobilized since 2021 by participation of five researchers from three different teams of Navier Laboratory in the framework of a PhD thesis, financially supported by Ecole des Ponts ParisTech.

MISCEA thesis offer ESR06 - Design and monitoring of tunnels facing energy and numerical transitions
Type of offer PhD
Target PhD
Location Champs sur Marne (Paris)
Education requirements Experience of a geotechnical internship or research project and of machine learning concepts would be highly valued.
Key Description This PhD project will focus on numerical modelling, taking into account thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) couplings, to evaluate the ground-support interaction and to have reliable predictions of the overall energy performance over time. Different numerical simulations will be carried out to account for the uncertainties in the design of these structures, taking into account the variations in stratigraphy and the presence of heterogeneities along the tunnel. The impact of this type of geostructure on the surrounding building and the interaction with existing underground structures will also be investigated. Soil characterisation from tunnel excavation projects, such as the Grand Paris Express, will form the basis of the different scenarios.
The objective of the second stage is to provide engineers with a simple tool for pre-design. This will be done on the basis of different scenarios that will allow to better take into account the uncertainties (based on the results obtained from the numerical simulations carried out in the second stage).

MISCEA thesis offer ESR05 - Offshore wind turbine monopile foundation: experimental and numerical study of soil-structure interaction
Type of offer PhD
Target PhD
Location Champs sur Marne (Paris)
Education requirements Necessary qualifications and skills for candidates At the time of the deadline, applicants must be in possession or finalizing their Master’s degree or equivalent/postgraduate degree. At the time of recruitment, applicants must be in possession of their Master’s degree or equivalent/postgraduate degree which would formally entitle to embark on a doctorate.
Key Description This present PhD offer entitled “Offshore wind turbine monopile foundation: experimental and numerical study of soil-structure interaction” has two main goals:
- Study of offshore wind turbine’s scale model subjected to cyclic loading. This study will include the improvement of the cyclic test procedure with a load-controlled setup. A parametric study can be considered: loading characteristics, sand density index, monopile rigidity, etc. The subsidence cone formation around the monopile should be also evaluated.
- Study and development of empirical laws predicting the displacement/rotation accumulation and the foundation stiffness evolution as a function of the cycles number. Simulation of permanent strains/displacements after first load cycle (as a basis for the usual cyclic extrapolation methods) should be considered. One possible approach is a 3D FE analysis of laterally loaded monopile and soil continuum with hypoplastic constitutive model. This work will be based on the cyclic test program conducted in Navier laboratory.

Game-theory and mechanism design for optimal decarbonization plan
Type of offer Internship
Target Students
Location France
Education requirements Maths & Economics
Key Description Currently, French government has delegated the CO2 emission ”management” (e.g., setting their own CO2 emissions target for 2050) to the regions and, because of the lack of coordination between them, the global CO2 reduction target is very likely to be largely missed, hence a crucial need to introduce and design coordinated decentralized emission strategies. It turns out that the state-of-the art of the scientific literature is incomplete for at least 3 reasons: 1. It focuses on this type of problems but only at the level of the countries (see the problem of agreement for the Conferences of Parties); 2. The proposed solutions are often empirical and do not rely on key mathematical properties that would guarantee the players to effectively implement the agreements; 3. The socio-economic modeling problem for a region largely differs from that at the country level.
The following internship project aims at modeling the complex relationships between local consumers, regions and national authority in this problem of designing efficient decarbonization plan/mechanisms.
