Sustainability in the Age of Polycrisis – Prospects, Contradictions, and Futures
Scuola Normale Superiore, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Paris Sciences et Lettres are organising a workshop on sustainability in the age of polycrisis to strengthen the research and training capacities of young scholars, and to foster new collaborations among EELISA institutions for joint research and teaching initiatives.
The workshop will feature interventions by scholars from the three organising institutions, but it will be centred around presentations from graduate and post-graduate students working on topics related to the workshop. It will be a learning opportunity for students to present and receive feedback on their ongoing works (e.g. the Master or PhD theses), with a view of submitting papers to the special issue of an international journal. It will end with a public outreach event engaging civil-society actors (trade unions, NGOs, think tanks) to connect academic reflection with societal debate.
The activity will analyse how different aspects of the polycrisis shape the prospects for socially inclusive and environmentally sound governance. The discussion will situate these themes within the evolving governance landscape of the EU, reflecting on developments since the Eurozone crisis, the so-called “refugee crisis”, the Covid-19 pandemic and on more recent transformations, including increased geopolitical competition between the EU, the US and China. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (including law, sociology and economics), the activity will focus will be on the social and environmental dimension of sustainability, framed around three main UN Sustainable Development Goals 8, 10 and 13.
