CIRCULAR CAMPUS 2030: Water Circularity and Circular Water Systems
Water Circularity and Circular Water Systems is the first of 3 workshops and 2 onsite events organised in the frame fo the Joint Call activity Cicular Campus 2030. This first touchpoint is organised by Istanbul Technical University, and it focuses on the concept of water circularity, plus the role its integration has within transforming university campuses into sustainable, resilient and resource-efficient environments.
Workshop structure
1. Conceptual Framework
– Principles of water circularity and comparisons between linear and circular models
– The water-energy-food nexus within campus systems
2. Technical Systems and Strategies
– Rainwater harvesting and water retention systems
– Greywater reuse and blackwater treatment systems
– Water recovery strategies and closed-loop systems
3. Spatial and Ecological Approaches
– Nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure
– Water-sensitive urban design approaches
– Relationships between landscape, infrastructure and hydrological processes
– Permeable surfaces and groundwater recharge systems
4. Resilience and Adaptation
– Ecological resilience and climate adaptation through water systems
– Water-based strategies addressing droughts, floods and urban heat island risks
5. Governance and User Behaviour
– Water consumption behaviour, awareness and participatory approaches
– Campus-scale water governance and monitoring/measurement system
– Water footprint calculations and their requirement
– The relationship between green certification systems and water management
Special attention will also be given to the spatial and ecological dimensions of water management throughout the workshop. The impacts of public spaces, permeable surfaces, ecological corridors, landscape design and campus infrastructure on water efficiency, biodiversity and environmental resilience will be discussed.
The workshop is intended to provide participants with a shared theoretical and systemic understanding of water circularity before the applied and collaborative phases that will take place in Istanbul and Bucharest. Therefore, the event will function both as a thematic introduction and as a conceptual preparation phase for the interdisciplinary project proposals to be developed during the hackathon process.
